“…They take their cues from each other, listening and responding like a study in transference. Karnas creates a rhythmic structure that appears in Robbins’ body in contractions, level changes, dynamic pauses, and arm slices. The dialogue continues and the duet rotates in space like a 3D model.” - Cecly Placenti, Motion by Degrees

City Wide Open Studios - Erector Square Weekend

  • Studio i (Erector Square) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Enter a space, physically or digitally, in which conversations between sound, movement, and time are the highest priority. In this 20 minute live performance, percussion and spoken word will investigate both linear and chaotic approaches to musical storytelling. With music by The Dave Brubeck Quartet and Lee Morgan, and with great respect for the visual art within the space, Robbins will provide audiences with a vulnerable and moving experience that questions the relationship between time as a social construct and the responsibility to keep it as a musician.

There will be 4 live performances (8 total) each day of Erector Square weekend (October 10th and 11th) on the hour at 2 PM, 3 PM, 4 PM and 5 PM EST. There is a limit of 5 people for in person performances, and no audience limit on Zoom. Please register online for an in person slot and/or email kamrdanceco@gmail.com for the Zoom link. You can tip Alexis via Venmo at Alexis-Robbins-kamrdance or via PayPal or Zelle at kamrdance77@gmail.com.

Percussive Dance Class for Musicians!

Percussive Dance Class for Musicians!

  • Parkville Sounds / The Dance Collective (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This class is for any musician looking to learn how to make music with a new instrument...your body (specifically your feet!)! Through the African American art form of tap dance technique, we will learn how to create percussive rhythms and phrases that will feel similar and brand new at the same time. We will start by going over a few basic tap steps in order to build a foundation of vocabulary and then move towards making phrases and improvisation games. Have you ever wondered how a tap dancer approaches a 32 bar chorus? Well you're about to learn! Do you play percussion and have wanted to better communicate with tap dancers? Well this is the class for you! Come with an open mind, willingness to have fun, and be ready to sing! This class is also open to any dancers that are new to tap dance (but not new to music theory) and want to work on their understanding of building phrases, musicality, and improvisation skills. No tap shoes required.

This class will be held OUTSIDE of the Dance Collective in the parking lot behind the building. We will be practicing strict social distancing guidelines. Please wear a mask!

Free/donation based. Any proceeds collected will go towards ImmaCare (homeless shelter in Hartford): http://immacare.org/
